i3net welcomes government announcement shortlisting a local gas fired power station.

The Illawarra has been announced as one of five gas projects shortlisted under the Federal Governments “Underwriting New Generation Investment” program.

The Federal Government considered 66 proposals against the program’s guidelines and has shortlisted 12 projects – six renewable pumped hydro projects, five gas projects and one coal upgrade project.  The program is a part of the Morrison Government’s plan to deliver affordable and reliable power.

Illawarra Innovative Industry Network (i3net) Chairperson Emilio Salucci welcomed the announcement.

The announcement was made by a joint media release by The Hon Scott Morrison MP Prime Minister, The Hon Michael McCormack MP Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, The Hon Angus Taylor MP Minister for Energy and Senator The Hon Matt Canavan MP Minister for Resources and Northern Australia.

“There is an overwhelming need for new and substantial gas supplies for the NSW energy market, and any increased gas supply into NSW will ease price pressures for industry. That’s one of many reasons why i3net endorsed AIE’s submission.” Mr Salucci said.

Mr Salucci said the proposed LNG import terminal, which is well advanced in its development assessment, and the now proposed gas fired power station will be a significant investment for the region. The key benefit of the AIE project is lower gas and electricity costs. This will provide the following benefits to the region:

  • Increasing the competitiveness of local manufacturing companies
  • Retention / increase of local manufacturing jobs
  • Attraction of new industrial and manufacturing clients to the region.

“This will bolster resilience in our region,” Mr Salucci said.

“It should also be noted that the project also provides positive industry diversification within the port precinct, and also for those local businesses who could support the terminal throughout its life” added Mr Salucci.

Mr Salucci said at a local level, Australian Industrial Energy (AIE) have strongly shown their commitment to the Illawarra region by joining i3net, attending our events and speaking at the annual industry showcase. The openness and approachability of AIE is appreciated and to be commended.

i3net fully supports AIE in developing the LNG import terminal and power station at Port Kembla. i3net is engaged and willing to support this initiative to ensure its success. We are looking forward to working with AIE to ensure that Illawarra Industry maximises any opportunity to be part of this valuable supply chain.
